The Founding of New Jersey

The Province of New Jersey was established in 1674. It became a Royal Colony in 1702 under Queen Anne with Edward Hyde as the first Governor. It became a US State on 18 December 1787. In 1787, New Jersey became the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and the first state to sign the Bill of Rights. In 1790, Trenton officially became the state capital of New Jersey.

Of course this wasn't the first time people ever lived in, what is now known as, New Jersey. I want each of you to blog about who you think lived here, and what you know about the founding of NJ. I want you to talk to your parents, grandparents, and other family members to see how long your family has been established in NJ. Try your best to find out, it will be interesting to see how long some of us have been living here, some of your ansestors may have even been one of the first to live in the state of New Jersey.

For homework to be turned in on paper in class by Monday, I want you to define the U.S Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and find out what the original 13 colonies were. This will play a big role in the better understanding of early NJ History.
