20th Century

1900-1999

Technology, science, and inventions have progressed at an accelerated rate during the hundred years of the 20th century, more so than any other century.

There were also many devistating things that happened during the 20th centuries. New Jersey, as well as the rest of the country, went through wars.

- During the World Wars NJ was the center of war production.

In class we discussed all of the new inventions that had taken place during the 20th century. I would like each of you to blog about one of the inventions that you could not live without today, and a brief description why. It can be something small, or very large.

How We Make Money

Every state has different ways of being able to support their state. In class we discussed how NJ makes most of their money. We said tourism, fruit, and fruit were just a few of them.

We discussed this in class, but for homework you are to blog about one of the ways that NJ makes money, and try to sell a certain thing to make the state a lot of money. During class we are going to work on a broshure to try to get different students to want to either go to, or buy things from you.

Examples
- You're advertising a hotel on the beach
- You want to sell cranberyy muffins
- You want people to go to 6 Flags Great Adventure.

Be creative, the blog is only your proposle, it's just going to help me, and other students get a better idea of what you're trying to do.

21 Counties

New Jersey contains 21 counties. For your first test you will be give a blank map of NJ and fill in all of the counties in the appropriate locations. The capitol of NJ is Trenton. You will also need to find out where Trenton is, and locate it on the map.

If you would like practice, I would recommend printing out the picture above to write in all of the counties. It is your responsibility to find them, whether it be online or in a book, and put them in the right location.

New Jersey is considered the Garden State. As you reseach the different counties, you will be able to see how similar and different each of them are. I want you to each blog about why you think certain counties give to the name of the "Garden State" and why you do not think others would apply. You don't have to do any research, just try and think of why certain things would and would not apply.

New Jersey Today

Now that we have learned about the founding of NJ, before we go any farther I want us to be able to understand New Jersey today. There are many features of NJ that make it unique from all other states in the United States.

Above is the state flower, and bird for NJ. FOR HOMEWORK I want you to be able to identify the following.
-State bird
-State flower
-State tree
-State flag
-State populataion
-Number of counties
-Two state senators
-Number of US representatives
-Current governer

Now I would like for each of you to blog about your favorite thing about New Jersey. Whether it be a spot, like the beach or amusment park, or a sports team; just be specific and give details about why this is your favorite place.

The Founding of New Jersey

The Province of New Jersey was established in 1674. It became a Royal Colony in 1702 under Queen Anne with Edward Hyde as the first Governor. It became a US State on 18 December 1787. In 1787, New Jersey became the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and the first state to sign the Bill of Rights. In 1790, Trenton officially became the state capital of New Jersey.

Of course this wasn't the first time people ever lived in, what is now known as, New Jersey. I want each of you to blog about who you think lived here, and what you know about the founding of NJ. I want you to talk to your parents, grandparents, and other family members to see how long your family has been established in NJ. Try your best to find out, it will be interesting to see how long some of us have been living here, some of your ansestors may have even been one of the first to live in the state of New Jersey.

For homework to be turned in on paper in class by Monday, I want you to define the U.S Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and find out what the original 13 colonies were. This will play a big role in the better understanding of early NJ History.

Welcome

This blog will keep us updated with what we are learning about in NJ History. You are to read these blogs on a regular basis. There will be blogs that you have to post, and homework will be assigned on here! No excuses for not doing homework if you're absent :) This will be a great way to communicate with one another, and learn new things about all of us!

For practice, I just want all of you to comment on the blog with you're name just to check to make sure that you know how to do this.
